for the Season

The Buechel Memorial Lakota Museum is closed for the Winter Season and will open beginning Memorial Day. Special visits to the museum can be arranged with prior notice.

Memorial Day -- Labor Day (Summer Season)

Monday - Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Labor Day -- Memorial Day (Winter Season)

By appointment only, Monday to Friday.

Please note that in the winter we normally work on the collection/displays. Thus we cannot always open the museum for you. If we know you are coming we will make the best arrangments possible to accomodate your tour. Please contact us ahead of time, whether you are a single person or a group!


Church Museum


If you are coming with a group it is very helpful to e-mail or phone ahead so we can be prepared. Please call with the name of your group, time of arrival, number in the group and amount of time you expect to spend in the museum.

Driving Directions To The Museum --


St. Francis is accessible from several highways. To the north of the Reservation is Interstate 90. Crossing the reservation are State Highways 44 and 18. To the south of the reservation in Nebraska is Highway 20. Here are directions from each of these highways.

Heading West on Highway 20: Turn RIGHT (North) at Kilgore, Nebraska at the sign for St. Francis. You will leave Nebraska and see a sign for the Rosebud Reservation. Continue on the road. You'll eventually see a radio tower on the right-- KINI, the Mission radio station. Continue north until you come to a sign for the museum. Turn right into the parking lot. If you miss the sign the most prominent landmark is the Catholic Church. The museum is to the right of the Church if you are facing the front door of the Church. From the back of the Church the museum is on the left.

Heading East on Highway 20: Turn LEFT (north) at Kilgore, Nebraska at the sign for St. Francis. You will leave Nebraska and see a sign for the Rosebud Reservation. Continue on the road. You will go through the town of St. Francis. You will see a gas station on your left and then a grocery store and post office on your right. Continue through town until you see the sign for the museum on the left side of the road. Turn left on the street and then right. The museum building is just before the Church.

Heading East on Highway 18: Turn RIGHT (north) at the sign for Rosebud and St. Francis on to BIA 7. Go 8 miles on BIA 7. Take a RIGHT at the sign for St. Francis BIA 1. Go six miles on this road. You will go through the town of St. Francis. You will see a gas station on your left and then a grocery store and post office on your right. Continue through town until you see the sign for the museum on the left side of the road. Turn left on the street and then right. The museum building is just before the Church.

Heading West on Interstate 90: Take Exit 150 at Kadoka (US-83 South). Go south on Highway 83 for 21 miles to the Route 44 junction. At the junction turn left (east) and go for 16 miles to the Route 63 junction. Take a right (south) on 63 for about 28 miles to Highway 18. Go two miles and turn right on BIA 7 (you'll see a sign for St. Francis / Rosebud). Go 8 miles on BIA 7. Take a right at the sign for St. Francis BIA 1. Go six miles When you come to the junction of Route 18. You will then pass through the town of Parmalee. You will come to the junction of Highway 18. It is a T junction. Turn left and a few miles down the road you'll see a sign a sign on your right saying St. Francis. Turn right at that sign. Stay on this road until you go through the town of St. Francis. You will see a gas station on your left and then a grocery store and post office on your right. Continue through town until you see the sign for the museum. Turn left on the street and then right. The museum building is just before the Church.

Heading West on Interstate 90: Take Exit 150 at Kadoka (US-83 South) towards Murdo / White River. Go south on Highway 83 for 42 miles to the Route 44 junction. At the junction turn left (east) and go for 16 miles to the Route 63 junction. Take a right (south) on 63 for about 28 miles to Highway 18. Go two miles and turn right on BIA 7 (you'll see a sign for St. Francis / Rosebud). Go 8 miles on BIA 7. Take a right at the sign for St. Francis BIA 1. Go six miles When you come to the junction of Route 18. You will then pass through the town of Parmalee. You will come to the junction of Highway 18. It is a T junction. Turn left and a few miles down the road you'll see a sign a sign on your right saying St. Francis. Turn right at that sign. Stay on this road until you go through the town of St. Francis. You will see a gas station on your left and then a grocery store and post office on your right. Continue through town until you see the sign for the museum. Turn left on the street and then right. The museum building is just before the Church.

From the Rosebud Casino: Turn left (North) out of the Casino driveway onto 83 North. Take 83 North until it ends at Mission. At Mission turn left on Highway 18. Take Highway 18 West until you see a sign for "Rosebud / St. Francis". This is BIA Route 7. Up the hill from Rosebud (you will go through the town) you will see a sign for St. Francis. Take a left at that sign to BIA Route 1. Take BIA Route 1 until you come through the town of St. Francis (some stores and a post office). Continue until you see a sign for the museum. Turn left into our parking lot.
